BILLINGS - It wasn't an auto-show, but hundreds of cars were on display at the Rimrock Mall this weekend. Designs ranged from sports cars to wheeled blocks of cheese. Members of Troop 3 competed in the last day of this year's Pinewood Derby at the Rimrock Mall.

They were led by Scout Master John Wessell. "The Pinewood Derby is kind of the culmination of scouting, and it's usually the most fun activity of the year," he said, "they really look forward to it."
Some focused on building the perfect car, others tried and will their car to victory. Neither strategy is fail-proof as John's son Christian told us.

"I got in last place every single time," said Christian. "He hasn't had the greatest day racing but you know it's just been fun for him to come down and compete with kids," said John.
John said the derby is a proud scouting tradition, but much has changed over the years. Tracks are standardized, timing computerized, and designs globalized. "We looked at the computer and printed papers out, and I picked one," said Christian about his design.

But technology takes a back seat come race time. John said, "it's pretty exciting. It can be a little stressful, a little bit of tension getting your car in line making sure the paint dries, and wheels run appropriately."
Some scouts build cars to win, others build for looks. Parents tend to do a better job of both. John said scouts often have, "some excellent consultation." But he said it doesn't really matter.

"The most important thing about pinewood derby, is kids getting together with their families having a great time," John said, "it doesn't matter if they win or lose they're just out there giving their best effort." He said scouts' derby memories last much longer than the races.
